We are proud to be collaborating with Waterloo Uncovered to bring you a new video series. Waterloo Uncovered is a registered UK charity that combines a world‐class archaeology project on the battlefield of Waterloo with veteran care and recovery. Working in partnership with some of Europe’s top universities, and through the unique perspective of a team comprised of archaeologists, veterans, and serving soldiers, Waterloo Uncovered aims to understand war and its impact on people — and to educate the public about it.
In this third episode in the series, Phil Harding explains how sites can develop significant symbolic value, and how archaeology can help us to understand and protect these special sites. The key example of Bulford (an important army base) on Salisbury Plain, one of Phil's best ever sites, has been considered highly important for thousands of years. This is evidenced by fascinating archaeology, such as Neolithic burials and finds including a flint arrowhead, scraper and axe. The value of archaeology to help us understand symbolic sites is particularly relevant to the work of Waterloo Uncovered. The site of Waterloo holds a special symbolism, as Phil explains in this latest fascinating lecture.
