In this video, we cover key concepts from Topic 2.6 of AP Precalculus, focusing on function modeling and residuals. We quickly review how to create equations for linear, quadratic, and exponential data sets using their respective formulas:
y=mx+b for linear, y=a(x−b)^2+c for quadratic, and y=ab^x for exponential
We also explain how to find regression equations on a calculator and introduce the concept of residuals, which measure the difference between actual data points and predicted values from a model. A good model will produce a residual plot with no discernible pattern, indicating that the errors are random. Lastly, we touch on how overestimating or underestimating in a model depends on the context of the data set.
