This video shows the difference between using a soldering iron and hot air station to remove a component (in this case a ROM Chip) that uses through hole technology, often referred to as THT. The entire purpose of this video is to show that this can be done using an inexpensive soldering iron in the $30-$60 dollar range and some solder wick and flux. Additionally I show the same process using a hot air station to demonstrate the difference in the time required to remove the same component. The reason I chose to do this video is because I often am asked if someone can do repairs that I do with only a soldering iron and the answer to this is yes there are many scenarios where a soldering iron is all that is needed. This video demonstrates what can be achieved with enough effort using a soldering iron. It also demonstrates why a hot air station is preferred for many repairs as its far more efficient at removing certain components from a PCB.
Although I chose to showcase this on an older electronic with larger components the same technique can be used on many electronics even newer ones to remove certain components using only a soldering iron. Keep in mind that certain surface mounted component this will never work on because the solder pads/legs are underneath the component and its not possible to heat them with the soldering iron. These components require hot tweezers or a hot air station.
