Royal Decree (1854): The market was established by a royal decree from King Oscar I. It was officially started to regulate trade in the region, providing a legal and organized way for people to buy and sell essential goods.
A Winter Life-Line: Historically, Røros was an isolated mining town. The market, held every February, was crucial for survival. It allowed mountain farmers, Sami traders, and merchants from Sweden and surrounding Norwegian valleys to exchange meat, hides, wool, and corn for the copper company’s products.
