MANILA — The Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) is validating information it has received as authorities continue the manhunt for businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang, who is facing charges in connection with the case of the missing sabungeros.
CIDG National Capital Region chief Police Colonel John Guiagui said they are currently verifying at least 17 messages sent to their hotlines following the announcement of a ₱10-million reward for information leading to Ang’s arrest.
“Magmula ito kung saan siya huling nakita before ng paglabas ng warrant up to the point na allegedly nakita siya sa isang location,” Guiagui said.
He added that operatives have already searched 10 locations allegedly owned by Ang or linked to people known to him, including a farm in Porac, Pampanga.
“Nakausap din namin ‘yung mismong may-ari at sinasabi niya, yes, magkakilala sila way back nung sa online sabong dahil doon kumukuha ng mga manok para doon sa mga laban,” Guiagui said.
Authorities also searched a property in Rosario, Batangas, but residents there denied knowing Ang.
Guiagui admitted that tracking down the businessman remains challenging, citing Ang’s resources and network.
“Napaghandaan na niya ito. He has the resources. He has a circle of friends. He has properties na pwedeng nagagamit para sa kanyang pagtatago,” he said.
“So sa ating paniniwala, andito siya sa Pilipinas pa. It’s quite challenging dahil ang information natin is from time to time, nagmo-move siya. Hindi siya tumitigil sa isang lugar,” Guiagui said.
Guiagui also dismissed claims that the manhunt is merely scripted and they will allegedly share the reward among themselves.
“Hindi kami magpapagod, magpupuyat, spending our resources para lang hanapin si Charlie Ang kung ito ay scripted. We are sacrificing our time, our health, our life, tapos sasabihin natin na scripted lang ito,” he said.
Meanwhile, PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño said the PNP is investigating several senior police officers believed to be aiding Ang in hiding.
According to Tuaño, the Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM) was instructed by PNP chief to look into the profiles of identified individuals and determine possible administrative and criminal liabilities.
“Kinuha nila ‘yung profile nung mga individual sa ating DPRM na pinag-aaralan kung ano ‘yung mga administrative at possibly criminal sanctions ng mga naidentify na individuals,” Tuaño said.
He confirmed that both active and retired officers are included in the probe, adding that four retired police generals are among those being investigated.
However, authorities have yet to publicly identify how many officers are allegedly involved.
As of now, 21 co-accused of Ang in the case of the missing sabungeros are under CIDG custody.
Fourteen of them are police officers, while seven are civilians believed to be security personnel and employees of Ang at cockpits linked to online sabong operations.
The PNP said operations to locate and arrest Ang are ongoing, urging the public to continue providing credible information through official hotlines.
