Anyone would have killed for the chance to trade vocals over Eddie Van Halen’s blistering guitar work back then, and even though Sammy Hagar had plenty of other paths he could’ve taken, there was no way he was passing up the opportunity once a song like “Summer Nights” came together. From the very first notes, the chemistry was undeniable. Still, before he ever stepped onto the stage, Hagar knew there were a few boundaries that had to be set.
At the time, Hagar was already a proven solo powerhouse, and that status came with certain realities. He couldn’t simply walk into Van Halen and expect to play his own catalog every night. Sure, as the years went on, the band loosened up a bit, occasionally slipping in tracks like “Only One Way to Rock” or even dipping back into Montrose territory. But joining a juggernaut like Van Halen meant understanding one thing first: their band, their rules.
The group was also very strategic about how they introduced this new era to the world. Skipping official music videos for 5150 was a bold move, but they won fans over the old-school way—by taking it straight to the stage. Some of Van Halen’s most electric moments came from that raw, live connection. Still, for longtime fans, there was no ignoring the absence of several beloved classics from the setlists.
