Singularities under field redefinitions
Resumo/Abstract:
Spacetime singularities comprise a major obstacle to the understanding of High-Energy Physics. It is generally believed that only a full-fledged theory of Quantum Gravity would be able to smooth them out. In this talk, I will describe a recent proposal where singularities result from ill-defined configuration-space coordinates. I will show that some of the well-known spacetime singularities become smooth under changes of configuration-space coordinates (i.e. field redefinitions). This leads to the definition of covariant singularities, namely coordinate-independent singularities in configuration space (where observables are indeed defined) rather than in spacetime (which seems to play only an instrumental role in Physics).
