Azerbaijan School Hijab Ban: Students Protest, 37 Detained Amid Secular Dress Code Row

Описание: Azerbaijan School Hijab Ban: Students Protest, 37 Detained Amid Secular Dress Code Row

A major controversy has erupted across Azerbaijan after public schools began enforcing strict uniform guidelines that bar female students from wearing hijabs in classrooms and require female teachers to remove headcovers. The enforcement of these secular dress code policies has sparked widespread backlash from students and parents across Baku and regional districts such as Masally and Jalilabad. Protesters have responded with classroom boycotts, demonstrations outside school premises, and calls for educational strikes, demanding that Muslim students not be deprived of their fundamental right to education. In response to the unrest, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the arrest of 37 individuals in connection with public order offenses related to the uniform enforcement. While authorities maintain that the rules are necessary to preserve secular educational standards, human rights advocates and affected families warn that the ongoing standoff is disrupting students' academic progress and heightening social tension.
