Review: RÖCK, “Illusion of Choice”
With "Illusion of Choice", Dutch hard rock band RÖCK delivers one of their most focused and uncompromising statements to date. Awarded a strong four stars, the song combines raw aggression with a clearly articulated political philosophy, turning frustration and distrust into something sharp, loud, and disturbingly coherent.
At its core, the track argues that democratic choice is largely performative. The real power, RÖCK insists, operates behind the scenes, guided by lobbyists and corporate interests rather than voters. The artwork reinforces this idea with brutal clarity, pointing directly at pharmaceutical giants, big tech, defense contractors, tobacco, the weapons industry, and banking and insurance institutions as the true architects of policy. Politicians, in this worldview, are not decision makers but salespeople, smiling on screens while serving forces that remain conveniently invisible.
Lyrically, the song pulls no punches. The repeated cycle of empty promises, election season charm, and post vote disappearance is presented as a closed loop with no meaningful outcome. “Garbage in, garbage out” becomes more than a slogan. It is the logical result of a system where choice exists only in appearance. The refusal to vote is not framed as apathy, but as rejection. In RÖCK’s narrative, participation would mean legitimizing a rigged game.
This philosophy is confrontational and deliberately uncomfortable. The band challenges the common idea that voting automatically equals moral responsibility. Instead, they argue that consent without real power is meaningless, and that abstention can be a form of protest when all options serve the same interests. The repeated insistence on keeping one’s hands clean and conscience free reframes non participation as an ethical stance rather than disengagement.
Musically, the message hits hard. The riffs are tight and relentless, the rhythm section drives the song forward with a sense of urgency, and the vocals sound genuinely furious rather than theatrically angry. The raw language feels intentional, not gratuitous. It mirrors the lack of polish in a system the band sees as fundamentally corrupt.
What elevates "Illusion of Choice" above simple protest rock is its clarity. RÖCK knows exactly who they are angry at and why. While the song leaves little room for nuance or alternative interpretations, that bluntness is part of its power. It is not trying to persuade gently. It is trying to shake, provoke, and force listeners to question assumptions they may take for granted.
Fierce, focused, and unapologetically radical, "Illusion of Choice" stands as one of RÖCK’s strongest statements so far. It may not offer solutions, but it succeeds in exposing what the band sees as the lie at the heart of modern democracy. Loud enough to ignore, and honest enough to sting.
