Charlie Carrigan, a Glasgow boy, and an Irish Volunteer, died on his 34th birthday in Moore Street Dublin during Easter Week of 1916. Lyrics below
Words and Music Charlie Fealy
My name is Charlie Carrigan; I'm an Irish Volunteer
With my comrades of A Company at the turning of the year
We were ordered to leave Glasgow and to head for Dublin town
To get ready for engagement with the forces of the Crown
Born in Moore Street, Calton, in Glasgow on the Clyde
Now I'll die in Moore Street, Dublin; the Ó Rahilly by my side
Easter Monday on the Liffey Bank, outside Liberty Hall
I recall I started shaking when I heard the bugle call
Fall in, fall in - came Connolly's cry; we march on the GPO
That Monday seems so distant now but t'was less than a week ago
We could not hold the GPO; the fire was everywhere
We tried to tunnel our way out but Tommy was waiting there
I turned 34 today and I learned a bullet's sting
British bullets for my birthday; a present from the King
My name is Charie Carrigan and my dream to you I'll tell
I longed to travel Ireland and I longed to know her well
Now I'll never see those places long kept within my heart
But I'm glad I crossed the water; I'm glad I played my part
