The Third South Pacific Games were officially opened on 13 August 1969 at the Hubert Murray Stadium in Konedobu. His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent presided over the ceremony, reading a message from the Queen before the Games flag was raised. The opening was marked by vibrant traditional dances from Mekeo, Kiwai, the Western Highlands, and Manus.
More than 15,000 spectators filled the stadium to watch the colorful parade of over 1,000 athletes, led by New Caledonia, and to enjoy the Games song “Welcome in 1969” performed with the combined Police and Army bands.
The Games ran for nine days, from 13–23 August, featuring 15 sports across 15 venues in and around Port Moresby. Twelve nations and territories were represented, although transport difficulties prevented the Cook Islands and the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony from attending.
Papua New Guinea excelled in the pool, securing six gold medals in men’s swimming. Athletics saw a wave of new achievements, with 13 records set in the men’s 22 events and six more in the women’s 12 events. In the final medal tally, New Caledonia claimed the top spot, Papua New Guinea followed in second place, and Fiji secured third.
