After the dramatic flooding in Rio Grande do Sul in May 2024, local journalists and media outlets are still struggling to overcome the devastating impacts. Newsrooms were flooded, equipment was damaged, and reporting work became dangerous. Data from a survey conducted by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), in partnership with AJOR, show that more than 70% of the state’s media outlets did not have a contingency plan for extreme events. Since then, RSF has been working locally to strengthen local journalism and promote the climate resilience of media organizations. To date, 100 emergency kits have been distributed to journalists; 8 media outlets have received financial support; 5 journalists have been awarded grants to produce reports on the climate tragedy and its impacts; and 40 journalists have been trained on climate change.
RSF is an international non-profit organization that works to defend press freedom and promote independent journalism in more than 150 countries. In Brazil, the organization is committed to strengthening local media ecosystems, protecting environmental journalists, and providing the necessary tools so these professionals can continue reporting effectively, even in the face of extreme events.
