Speaking publicly for the first time on January 15, Cunio said he planned an escape every day but believed any attempt could cost the lives of his brother or girlfriend. He was held for 738 days after being kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7, 2023, along with seven other members of his family. Cunio says he was kept in civilian buildings, saw weapons hidden in UNRWA bags, and faced repeated pressure to convert to Islam. He and his brother David were freed on October 13 last year and have since begun sharing their story worldwide.
