I gave the canvas about three coats of gesso and let it dry thoroughly for about 24 to 36 hours. This helps to smoothen the texture of the canvas so the pens glide easily. I wouldn't recommend putting too much gesso on though, for leaving a bit of texture helps the paint to bond to the canvas. At least that's been my experience.
