Golden Order Greatsword: "Greatsword made of light, modeled after the Elden Ring itself. Forged by King Consort Radagon to proudly symbolize the tenets of the Golden Order. One of the legendary armaments.
Telltale signs betray that this was once the greatsword bequeathed to him by his first wife, Rennala."
Description:
The thumbnail shows the Misbegotten Crusader, who wields this weapon at the end of the Cave of the Forlorn. Out of curiosity, I checked the original Japanese, and the words used are more like 聖騎士 ("sei kishi", Holy Knight) and "Cave of Refuge", meaning that there is likely no connection between the Misbegotten Crusader and Messmer's crusade (聖戦 , or "seisen", Holy War).
We have no idea why a leonine misbegotten would be holding onto such an important seeming sword in the middle of some remote icy cave, when it likely should have been enshrined in the Queen's Bedchamber or the Erdtree Sanctuary at the Royal Capital of Leyndell. The leonine misbegotten are known for having red hair, much like Radagon himself. Further allusions to red-haired champions are given in the Shard of Alexander's description, hinting at the idea that there were more red-haired champions than Radagon alone. Perhaps their fiery red hair gave them a compulsion to prove themselves before the distrust of the Golden Order.
The name of "holy knight" or "crusader" implies that these misbegotten may have once served more highly in the Golden Order, before being reduced to "menials" at Castle Morne who would revolt against their masters like Castellan Edgar and Godrick the Grafted. We do see many outcast races, including the Misbegotten, taking shelter in the Haligtree's canopy and in Elphael itself, so it's possible that this Misbegotten Crusader was sheltering from the blizzard on his way to the Haligtree, fleeing the persecution of the Golden Order. Of course, this misbegotten may have also acquired the sword if Radagon or Marika were to have cast it away, or if the sword was stolen from its rightful place, but this is conjecture that will never be answered.
The fact that this weapon is now in the hands of an outcast speaks to the fractured, present state of the Golden Order.
The fact that the weapon was formerly a weapon bequeathed to Radagon by his first wife speaks to what the Golden Order always was, just as the Erdtree sprung forth from the primordial Crucible, then spurned all else that once originated from it, including the Crucible Knights and the Misbegotten.
