At first glance October appears to be rather cosmically ordinary in a year of outstanding months but there are significant events lurking behind the obvious. The faster-moving inner planets are all moving direct as they stir up a cacophony of noise by tossing a dizzying pace of events at us from every direction. On the surface, it seems as if there is a lot happening all at once as we march into the future. However, the month begins with all the slower-moving outer planets in retrograde motion, pulling us back into our recent past like a strong tidal undertow. Rather than making progress, we are regressing, living in a déjà vu world where events stir up uncomfortable familiarity and remind us of unfinished business. Retrograde Neptune backstrokes into the murky waters of Pisces on October 22, requiring us to reconsider the boundaries between reality and illusion. Patience is necessary as it will take until the Saturn-Neptune conjunction is perfected next February for us to truly see what is now transpiring.

Pluto is the first of the retrograde planets to turn direct on October 13 but for all practical purposes, the Lord of the Underworld is pretty much stationary all month, moving only 1/20th of a degree in 31 days! This places a powerful emphasis on Pluto’s connection to the evolutionary process of endings and new beginnings, especially when inquisitive Mercury and the illuminating Sun form dynamic squares with inexhaustible Pluto on October 7 and October 24, respectively. Shocking revelations, secret affairs, and hidden agendas may be brought out into the light, triggering a chain of potentially volatile reactions in response. We may feel like conflict is inevitable, but we can consciously choose to harm or heal with our own words and deeds. The truth can set us free, but only if we are willing to accept the facts in front of us.

Meanwhile, mentor Chiron conjuncts disruptive Eris on October 8. This slowly unfolding alignment connects the healing powers of Chiron with the radical exclusion and inclusion of dwarf planet Eris. Pushing past our resistance to uncover what was previously buried amplifies the potential for forgiveness; alternatively, closing our hearts and minds only furthers the extreme polarization society now faces. Mercury and the Sun oppose the Chiron-Eris combo on October 3 and October 17–18, exasperating the tensions that already seem untenable. Bombastic Jupiter sweeps into the configuration throughout the month as overconfidence and overwhelm warp reality on October 1 (Mercury square Jupiter), October 16 (Sun square Jupiter), and October 23 (Jupiter square Chiron). Overblown rhetoric and over-the-top promises are likely hazards; lowering our expectations and softening our voices enable us to connect on common ground or at least find a compromise for the sake of peace.

Venus enters the diplomatic territory of Libra on October 13, forming a self-referential Grand Air Trine with the ongoing Uranus-Pluto trine on the 14th. The revolutionary and regenerative connection between Uranus and Pluto will lead to the most profound changes ahead when their trine becomes exact next July for the first of five perfections over the next few years. Once again, we can see how this month is setting the stage for social realignments that are still percolating off in the distance. Nevertheless, what we do now—or what we don’t do—will bring hidden issues into unavoidable manifestations next year. October is not the main event; it is only the next prologue to the main event. Balancing the needs of others with our personal desires is an ongoing practice.

The Aries Full Moon on October 6 at 8:47 pm PDT is a stark reminder of the dangers of extremism as the relationship-oriented Libra Sun is opposed by the self-directed Aries Moon. Mercury’s entry into Scorpio the same day and its provocative square to Pluto on the 7th can unleash harsh words and upset the balance of power. The Libra New Moon on October 21 at 5:25 am PDT is the culmination of October’s energetic shift, creating a Grand Square with Jupiter, Chiron, Eris, and Pluto as the Moon and Sun move from airy Libra into watery Scorpio on the 22nd. Emotions are on the rise as the month draws to a close with Mercury and Mars in tumultuous Scorpio creating a Grand Water Trine with Jupiter and Saturn October 24–29. Although the Grand Trine is often considered a cosmic blessing, it also can intensify the current conditions, whatever they might be. It’s doubly important to remain vigilant of what is happening in our personal and collective worlds, participating in effecting change rather than becoming a victim to it.
