Snow looks pure.
White. Soft. Untouched.
But what does it actually look like when magnified?
In this video, we examine real snow under the microscope at 80×, 200×, 800× and 2000× magnification. At lower magnifications, delicate crystalline structures appear fragile and geometric. But as the temperature rises and the snow melts, the story changes.
For higher magnifications, the original snowflakes had already dissolved in the room — so we examined the water collected from beneath the snow.
What remains after melting is surprising.
Tiny suspended particles, atmospheric debris, and microscopic elements that were invisible to the naked eye reveal that snow is more than just frozen water. It carries traces of the air it passed through.
This video changes how you see something you’ve known your entire life.
Watch until 2000× — the transformation is worth it.
