4. SOUNDBITE (English) Craig Peters, US lawyer representing Elder’s family:
“I think that we always held on to faith in the system, in the legal system. Our hope, of course, has always been that we get justice, that hope tends to win albeit as you go further and further through the system and higher up, and this felt like the last chance, so there was conscious optimism, but also trying to keep that in check, because we have been disappointed too many times before. You know, there was a feeling of elation, that finally it had been recognised what the truth was or at least some of the elements of the truth that had been ignored, lost over by the lower courts, by the prosecution, by the Carabinieri. It’s nice to have finally some validation.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Leah Elder, mother of Finnegan Lee Elder:
“He (Finnegan Lee Elder) didn’t have a hope for the future for a long time after the first sentence. The second sentence allowed him to have a little bit (of hope), this now third court decision I think truly will allow him to envision what his life may look like and he wants to contribute, he has a lot to contribute, he has a really amazing heart.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Renato Borzone, Italian lawyer of Finnegan Lee Elder:
“This decision reconciles us a little bit with justice. The first two sentences left us unhappy because it was clear to us, you had to close your eyes to not see the truth, it was clear that the dynamics of the event were not as reported in the courtroom by the Carabiniere, Varriale, that until now was considered truthful.”

11. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Fabio Alonzi, lawyer of Gabriel Natale-Hjorth:
“The court on the specific point of Natale's concurrence in the deed committed by Elder ordered a new trial because it implicitly found the arguments made by the two trial courts that have judged Natale so far to be insufficient, did not consider the reasoning to be congruous and sent back the records. The retrial before a new appeal court, will be aimed at determining whether or not there was a concurrence of Natale in the act committed by Elder.”
