🚨 Officers from our Rural Operational Support Team (ROST) recently arrested a man near Hertford on suspicion of fly-tipping following a call from a member of the public.
Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of large items or waste on public roads, land or into rivers – from large household appliances like washing machines or discarded materials from construction sites. It has a devastating impact on rural communities, particularly on farmers and landowners who have to shoulder the huge financial costs associated with getting it removed.
❗️If you’re caught fly-tipping, you can now be fined up to £50,000 in magistrates’ court or unlimited fines in higher courts, as well as community punishment orders or prison sentences of up to five years.
👮Our ROST officers conduct proactive patrols across rural areas of Hertfordshire according to demand and intelligence, and work with landowners to pass on advice about how they can protect their land.
We need the public to help us by reporting incidents and any suspicious activity straight away. While we may not always be able to take immediate action, please be assured that every call does count and helps us to build up the intelligence we need to take matters forward. If you witness fly-tipping in progress, always dial 999, giving as much information as possible about any people or vehicles involved. If you come across a fly-tip, this should be reported to the local council.
