Earnings can be the primary driver of a stocks’ long-term growth, so it’s important to understand how earnings estimates work. Unfortunately, much of the investing industry gets the concept wrong.

Much of the industry worries about whether earnings will exceed analyst estimates, but this is the wrong focus. On average, companies are more likely than not to exceed analyst estimates because companies’ management teams typically undersell earnings potential in their discussions with analysts. The more important part of the conversation to focus on is how much management is underselling future earnings estimates.
