8. Funchal Airport (Madeira)
When designing an airport, architects face a series of challenges depending on the location, climate and terrain- but what do you do if there’s not enough space on an island to build a runway suitable for larger planes?
7. Barra Airport (Scotland)
Of all the features you commonly see at airports, a sturdy concrete runway would be one that you’d think was essential. But that’s exactly what Barra Airport doesn’t have- instead being the only place in the world that requires scheduled flights to land on runways that are marked out on a sandy beach by wooden posts.
6. Matekane Airstrip (Lesotho)
Lesotho is a small country that is the only independent state in the world where every part of land is at an elevation of at least 1,000 meters. It lies in the mountains, and is completely encircled by South Africa. The country has airports in its main cities, but uses a network of small landing strips for the Lesotho Flying Doctors service and charity organizations to reach the more remote villages to run health clinics and provide help.
5. Narsarsuaq Airport (Greenland)
Surrounded by snowy mountains and icy lakes, Narsarsuaq airport (say that 3 times fast!) is the only international airport in southern Greenland. It serves a small town, and is mainly used as a hub where passengers transfer to helicopters for the reminder of their journeys.
4. Camp Barneo (North Pole)
Ice and snow are treacherous conditions for planes, and the temporary runway at Camp Borneo is, itself, carved from ice- providing one of the most unusual and spectacular landing sites anywhere on earth.
3. Princess Juliana International Airport (St. Maarten)
Another island that has found the space needed for their airport to present difficulties is St. Maarten in the Caribbean. The island is actually split into two, with one half being a French overseas territory and the other belonging to the Netherlands.
2. Gibraltar Airport (Gibraltar)
One feature you generally expect from an airport runway is a dedicated stretch where planes can take off and land. In another case of space management, though, the international airport of Gibraltar has one that shares usage with another form of transport.
1. Paro international Airport (Bhutan)
Paro is the only international airport in Bhutan, and one that is considered so challenging that there are only a small number of pilots who are certified to land there. The difficulties come from the perilous location of the runway, 1.5 miles above sea level and surrounded by the sharp peaks of the Himalayan Mountains. With a runway that is 3,900 feet in length, Paro holds the record as one of the only airports in the world who’s runway is shorter than its elevation.
