On Monday November 17, Ontario Nature's Executive Director Andrés Jiménez Monge gave testimony on Bill 26 before the Standing Committee of the Interior at Queen's Park.
Ontario Nature supports Bill 26 with key amendments:
1) No reclassifying existing parks as “adventure class.”
2) Remove the clause allowing new park classes to be added by regulation.
Provincial parks and conservation reserves should remain places for low-impact recreation that protects ecological integrity. Recreation must align with the original Ontario Nature intent: ecological health first.
As long as management decisions stay with Ontario Parks staff, supported by monitoring and enforcement, ecological and recreational needs can be balanced—reflecting a practical, common-sense approach to park management.
Removing the clause for “other classes” ensures transparency, ecological protection, and public and Indigenous participation, while providing clarity for municipalities, industry, and communities.
Ontario’s natural areas build climate resilience, support local economies, and give families spaces to hike, camp, paddle, and pass on traditions. Protecting nature isn’t ideological—it’s part of who we are.
