Liduino Pitombeira
Plate Three: Hemera, Opus 263 (2021), for string quartet
Hemera is the third piece of a series of short works entitled Plates, which are associated to Greek Mythology. Hemera is the daughter of Nix and Erebo, represented in the previous pieces of the series. The materials for the piece are drawn from the twelve-tone series of the last movement (Walzer) of Schoenbergs’s Fünf Klavierstücke, Op.23. This series is applied in contexts of various moods that are built with diverse textural configurations throughout the work. At the end, Nix and Erebo appear (in the form of their musical themes from the first and second pieces of the series) and melt themselves in order to give birth to Hemera. The birth of Hemera is represented by a gradual modal lightening. The piece is dedicated to the Quarteto Kalimera (Καλή μέρα, in Greek, means ‘good day’ – the word Hemera (η μέρα) means the day).
The work is performed by the Kalimera String Quartet
