In this MARESUNEX Seminar, we step into the intersection of geochemistry and law to explore the complex world of modern mining supply chains. Guest speaker Faith Quigley provides a high-level overview of why the U.S. relies so heavily on minerals mined overseas and the legal frameworks that drove this globalization.
In this video, we discuss:
The Legal Shift: How landmark 1970s environmental laws like the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act increased domestic regulation, leading many mining operations to relocate to less-regulated jurisdictions abroad.
Globalized Supply Chains: Why U.S. companies often mine overseas while foreign companies simultaneously pursue projects within the United States.
The National Energy Emergency: Analyzing the current push for critical minerals and the trade-offs between domestic production and global sourcing.
Idaho's Role: Considering whether critical mineral supply chains could—or should—become more domestic, including potential impacts on local communities and environments.
