http://bowens.com.au In the December 2015 Bowens Builders Bulletin Magazine we take a look at Wolfdene Built and their medium density development at Point Cook. Wolfdene Built is part of the development company, Wolfdene and is responsible for the construction of their estate developments.
Steve Parsons, Director at Wolfdene Built, explains that they share the view of the Victorian government that medium density developments are an opportunity to produce affordable housing within the urban growth boundary.
However, affordable housing doesn’t have to be a cheaper looking product. Steve says that Wolfdene Built can “produce a high level of build and architecture at a very affordable price”.
Steve explains that, “many of the products that we use has been from the advise of Bowens. We are only as good as they are in providing us with that information.”
Bowens Account Manager, Chris Brogan, looked at the plans prior to building and recommended a number of innovative products that met both the design and budget requirements. It is in fact these products that help separate Wolfdene Built from many other volume builders.
One of the products that Chris introduced was the Weathergroove vertical timber cladding from Weathertex.
As Gavin Wilson, Weathertex Regional Sales Manager says, “if the builders send their plans across to their Bowens account manager, they can be passed on to us. We offer a free take off service and can have quantities and a price back to the builder via Bowens very fast.”
Chris says; “to get Gavin into site and go through what to use, where to use it and how to use it, makes the guys building the job a lot more comfortable knowing that Bowens has introduced them to an expert and takes out any guesswork.”
Steve appreciates the fact that Wolfdene Built can work closely with Bowens and Weathertex and together produce the best solutions for their projects. “It’s all about relationships and Bowens has great relationships with their suppliers” says Chris.
Weathergroove has a number of benefits that helps a builder to stand out from their competition.
Firstly, like all Weathertex products, Weathergroove is unique in having extremely high green credentials. It is manufactured in Australia from recycled hardwood and actually has a less than zero carbon footprint. “This means that Weathertex are able to trap more carbon in the product than it actually takes to manufacture it,” explains Gavin.
Secondly, the 3.6m wide sheets provide good coverage and most importantly can be joined off-stud. Builders don’t need to back block along the vertical joints and a PVC strip is used for the joins that, once it is painted, is virtually impossible to see on a finished wall.
The main benefit of this is that installation times are significantly reduced. There is also minimal wastage because you don’t have to cut the sheets at the studs. Being able to join off-stud saves the builder both time and money as well making it a great looking product.
Thirdly the sheets are very lightweight and easy to move. Steve explains that because of this feature they use Weathergroove predominantly on the second level. Ease of install is definitely an advantage and Weathergroove is ideally suited to second
story buildings.
‘Another benefit is that because it is a wood product, all standard carpenter tools, such as a traditional circular saw, can be used with Weathergroove. There isn’t any need to change tools or set up cutting rooms. Carpenters are able to transition quickly from frame stage to lock up which also contributes to a faster build.’
Weathergroove can be painted very easily. Steve says that “the finish is good and we know it will stand the test of time.”
Weathergroove is available in four finishes; Woodsmen, Smooth, Ruff Sawn as well as in a natural timber look. It definitely creates a point of difference especially compared to standard brick veneer or weatherboard homes.
Innovation is important to the building industry and Wolfdene Built are taking a lead. Instead of always using what they have in the past, they are open to new and innovative products. Chris explains; “If there is a product that suits their needs better than what they are using now, 9 times out of 10 they run with.”
As Gavin says, “If you are a builder looking for innovative product, Weathergroove really fits the bill.”
