There was a definite buzz around the barns on cross-country morning at the Galway Downs International Three-Day Event, mostly focused on the inaugural CCI3* course. While it proved it's merit as a true three-day challenge, it was fair and seemed to ride the way course designer Ian Stark had intended. 14 of 19 starters finished, four of whom posted flawless trips.
One pair to do so, was Jennie Brannigan and Cambalda. After overnight leaders Allison Springer and Arthur incurred 20 faults at fence 14, the Orca exiting the first water complex, Brannigan and Cambalda took over the lead. Tamra Smith, who is catch riding Corner Street for Kristi Nunnink this weekend, also posted a double-clear cross-country trip to move into second place, only point six faults behind Brannigan.
While Alexandra Slusher leads the two-star aboard Juicy Catoure, she also moved into third place in the CCI3* aboard Last Call, after what she is calling the two best rides she's ever had on this mare.
In the SmartPak Equine USEA Classic Series divisions, standings didn't change quite as much. Katherine Groesbeck holds the first and second ranks in the long-format CCI* with her two Anglo Arab geldings, who are full brothers.
In the Training Three-Day, Sierra Mathais and Regal Exit remain in the lead of division B adding no faults from phase A through D. In division A, Erin Spohr and Bravo followed suit to remain in the lead on their dressage score of 26.3.
