Filmed in autumn 1944 in what was then the Slovak Republic, the footage shows a group of Muslim volunteers serving within the Waffen-SS taking part in a collective prayer. At the forefront stands the Uzbek imam Nureddin Namangani leading the prayer. In later scenes, the unit’s commander, Wilhelm Hintersatz—known after his conversion to Islam as Harun el-Raschid Bey—can be seen. The images date from the period immediately following the official creation of the so-called Osttürkischer Waffen-Verband der SS, formalised in October 1944 by order of Heinrich Himmler.
