So, we are here at the Glenfinnan Viaduct near Fort Williams in Scotland on a chilly October morning, especially to see the steam train as it rolls over the viaduct.
Let’s start with some history. The Glenfinnan Viaduct was completed in 1901 and was a real engineering feat for its time. It has 21 arches, each 15 meters wide, curving over the landscape for a total length of 380 meters and standing 30 meters high. The viaduct was crucial for connecting the communities of Fort William and Mallaig and remains a symbol of Scotland’s industrial heritage.
The Glenfinnan area is notorious for its midges—tiny biting insects most active from late spring through early autumn. These insects thrive in damp, mild climate of Scotland. They are a nuisance, and it is best to wear repellent and protective clothing when hiking or spending time outdoors near Glenfinnan.
Today, the route offers one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, especially aboard the Jacobite steam train, which operates primarily in the summer months. The train and viaduct gained worldwide fame as the “Hogwarts Express” in the Harry Potter films, making them popular with visitors and fans alike.
The viaduct sits near the Glenfinnan Monument, which commemorates the 1745 Jacobite Rising led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, connecting the area to significant Scottish history. The viaduct and steam train are not just transport infrastructure but also living symbols of Scotland’s engineering heritage and cultural identity.
Wow! That was quite a performance by the “Hogwarts Express”! I hope to come back for more!
