Raising Butterflies! The big “wet poopy”… a sure sign your caterpillar is getting ready to pupate

In this short video, I show you 7 of 9’s “wet poopy”… the big yellowish stain around a collection of caterpillar dross that occurs when a caterpillar is ready to pupate. I think it may be an indicator of a chemical reaction occurring inside the caterpillar, perhaps creating the silk it will need to form a small pad for the cremaster to hook into, as well as the silk girdle that swallowtail butterflies use to hold their chrysalises upright. (Monarchs hang upside down from their cremasters.)
This is a key sign in a caterpillar’s pupation. You won’t always see it if you’re hosting your caterpillars on potted plants. But if they’re hanging over the edge of the pot on a plant stem, you’ll see it on the paper towel beneath them.
