A social-media post by Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains intended to highlight improvements in a government school has instead triggered controversy over two spelling mistakes visible inside a classroom.

Bains shared photographs of Government Primary School Basti Hazoor Singh in Fazilka while discussing the Aam Aadmi Party government’s “Sikhya Kranti” education programme. One classroom poster, however, showed “deer” incorrectly written as “dear” and “vegetables” written as “vegitables.”

Opposition leaders enlarged the photograph and used the errors to question the quality of teaching in Punjab’s government schools. BJP leader Amit Malviya said the government should concentrate less on publicity and more on basic education. The Shiromani Akali Dal also mocked the mistakes and criticised the state’s education record.

Bains responded by accusing his opponents of ignoring broader reforms while concentrating on a single classroom poster. He said Punjab had improved its position in school education, upgraded more than 19,000 government schools and constructed thousands of classrooms. He added that the government would continue fixing school buildings, boards, spellings and academic results.

The school shown in the post had also suffered damage during the 2025 floods. Three classrooms were declared unsafe, and students were shifted to nearby facilities. The government has sanctioned ₹28.65 lakh for three replacement classrooms, with the school included among hundreds being redeveloped.

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal later challenged the BJP to compare 1,000 government schools in Punjab with 1,000 in Gujarat.

The incident involved a Punjab government school, not a “Kejriwal school” officially named after or personally managed by Kejriwal.
