The song Norwegian Wood by the Beatles was the first time I heard the sitar in a rock music setting. The explosion of sitar-based pop music that followed, later dubbed Raga Rock, was an exceptional time in the history of popular music. In this episode, I’m going to take a look at the role that the sitar played in pop music during the mid to late 1960’s. Sixties pop icons like the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Yardbirds and the Byrds all had a hand in the Raga Rock movement. As music became more psychedelic later in the decade, a second wave of bands like the Lemon Pipers, the Monkees, Traffic, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Joe South and the Box Tops furthered the movement. Once the Swinging Sixties rolled over into the ‘70’s, the use of sitar died down fairly quickly, although some ‘70’s icons like Yes, Genesis and Steely Dan kept their freak flags waving. Put on your tie-dyed T-shirts, fire up your lava lamp and get ready to turn on the sitar experience.
