Make sure to sign up at professor of rock .com Selecting 5 Vocal Moments from an exceptional decade of music, like the 80s, seemed impossible to me. At first, when the POR community asked me about doing a countdown, I didn’t think it could be done. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe how good the vocal performances were. But the moments we chose were arguably, unrivaled standard bearers of excellence and achievement, even though there are countless others that could’ve made the list.

We start off our top vocal countdown with the greatest female rock voice of the 70s and 80s. I have Ann Wilson’s wailing tour de force in Heart’s “Alone” at #5 By the time Ann put her glorious voice to “Alone” in ’87, it had already been recorded by the co-authors of the tune, the songwriting duo of Billy Steinberg & Tom Kelly. I got the details about how the song was conceived by Billy, himself. Plus, Ann sat down with me at the Sunset Marquis in Hollywood and told me how the song found its way to her & Nancy for their album Bad Animals: Heart’s signature version of “Alone” was a massive smash. It was the lead single from the band’s 9th studio album, Bad Animals, rising to #3 in the UK, and #1 in Canada and on the Billboard Hot 100:

Ann’s astronomical range is one of the main reason’s why her performance on “Alone” is so amazing, but it’s also her gifted control. Ann starts her vocal soft and vulnerable in the verses, then builds to that explosive, soaring chorus that sends us into sonic ecstasy. And let’s not forget her tone—rich, clear, and full of intensity, yet never losing its warmth. It’s the kind of performance that grabs you from the first note and doesn’t let go. “Alone” is a dynamic example of why Ann Wilson is one of Rock’s greatest singers:

Next up on our countdown is a seminal rock track from one of the best selling albums of all time. At #4, it’s the blue-collar authenticity of Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora in “Livin’ On a Prayer:” “Livin’ on a Prayer” co-written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Desmond Child, tells the story of Tommy and Gina, young couple inspired by a real-life chapter in Desmond Child’s life during the late ‘70s. Gina was a waitress and Tommy worked on the docks. At the time of the writing of “Livin’ on a Prayer,” Desmond was living with his then-girlfriend, singer Maria Vidal.
