Right now, Tanzania is burning with tension after days of maandamano (protests) spreading from Dar es Salaam to other towns. What started as anger over unfair elections and leadership issues has turned into a national outcry — especially from the Gen Z generation, who say they are tired of corruption, poverty, and silence from their leaders.
People have filled the streets carrying placards, chanting, and calling for justice, democracy, and leadership change. In Dar, fires have been seen on major roads like Nelson Mandela Road, Ubungo, and Kimara, as police try to push protesters back using tear gas and arrests.
The government has responded with curfew orders, internet slowdowns, and heavy police presence. Reports say many young people have been detained, while others are hiding after police raids in known protest areas. Despite this, Tanzanians online are still sharing clips through VPNs, showing crowds shouting “Haki yetu! Haki yetu!” (our rights!) and waving homemade flags.
Inside the protests, the message is clear — people want change, jobs, and freedom of speech. Many accuse the current leadership of silencing the opposition, manipulating elections, and blocking progress.
The mood on the ground is both fearful and hopeful — fearful because of the arrests and army patrols, but hopeful because this is the first time in years people have come out this boldly, united by one voice demanding truth and fairness.
