As part of my training for the Appalachian Trail, I spent a rainy day exploring Hanging Rock State Park in the Sauratown Mountains of North Carolina. Just an hour north of Winston-Salem, this 9,000-acre park offers rugged climbs, peaceful trails, and stunning overlooks—the perfect proving ground for building strength, endurance, and mental focus.
From the iconic Hanging Rock overlook to the waterfalls, forest paths, and historic CCC-built trails, this hike tested me physically and mentally while offering a powerful reminder: every climb has its rewards.
