FIRST OFF we introduce the Soild White ShihTzu. Not to be confused with an albino
ShihTzu. A pure white ShihTzu will have a black nose and black eyelids White an
Albino ShihTzu which are frowned upon as a defect. Albino ShihTzus have pink noses
and pink eyelids. Albinism is a genetic condition that affects many breeds.
Responsible breeders will not allow a puppy with this genetic condition to be bred
and may require you to as the buyer to have the puppy spayed or neutered. This
is to help keep the ShihTzu breed pure. Furthermore an albino ShihTzu will be
disqualified from most kennel clubs.
Next we have a solid Blue. Very Rare and a true blue can be very expensive.
Sometimes blue can be tricky and hard to determine, Some noses are obvious and are
light purpleish blue or light grey, but some are a real dark gunmetal grey and you
may think it's black. We have a video coming soon that will help explain how to
produce a true blue ShihTzu.
Next we have a solid gold. A pure gold Shih Tzu is extremely rare even though this
color often appears on multi or particolored. A gold Shih Tzu puppy will usually
have a vivid coat at birth, but this may fade to a pale yellow as he or she
matures. Most gold Shih Tzus have a rather more orange or red hue to their coats.
Next is the Red Shih Tzus are a similar color to the Irish Setter with their richly
colored coats ranging from orange to deep auburn. A red Shih Tzu with a brown nose
would be registered as a liver Shih Tzu rather than a red, however, so it’s only
those with black noses and deep red coats that can be considered true reds.
So don't be fooled.
There is also a Liver color also known as Chocolate. In Shih Tzus, "chocolate" is
sometimes used informally to describe a dark liver color, but "liver" is the
official and more accurate term. Liver refers to a reddish-brown or dark brown skin
pigmentation, including nose, eye rims, lips, and paw pads. While some might refer
to darker liver colors as "chocolate," it's not an officially recognized color in
the breed. Although they are high sought over.
Next is the silver shihtzu. silver can be difficult to distinguish from white.
Silver Shih Tzus are generally pale in appearance but have a silvery sheen to their
coats that white Shih Tzus lack. Like the white variety, the silver also has black
pads, eye rims, and lips, as well as a black nose.
Age also has a significant impact on a silver dog’s coat coloration, with older
silver Shih Tzus becoming increasingly grey as they mature. Conversely, some Shih
Tzus that are born black “transition to a more silver color coat” as they age.
Solid silver Shih Tzus are relatively rare even though color combinations like
silver and white and black, gold, and silver are comparatively common.
Finally we have an extremely rare black. many of those that appear completely black
will have shades of blue or chocolate in their coats. Most black Shih Tzus have
white markings somewhere on them, although pure black pups do exist.
Black Shih Tzus with golden hairs visible on its face, paws, or tail is considered
to be a black and tan dog rather than a black dog with tan markings. Black is
extremely rare and can be expensive.
Next we will talk about color combinations that are accepted by kennel clubs and
breeders. Stay tuned for that video.
Any photos used in this video are simply used as perfect descriptions of the ShihTzu breed and are not necessarily of my own dog. I chose each photo carefully looking for the highest breed standards and color combinations to show what the breed allows.
