About the book
'Secular States, Religious Politics – India, Turkey, and the Future of Secularism’ is a pioneering comparative study of the two major attempts to build secular states—where the constitutional identity and fundamental character of the state are not based on or derived from any religious faith—in the non-Western world. It explains the origins and evolution of the Indian and Turkish secular states, their anomalies and paradoxes, and the decline of secularism as a core principle of the state in the two countries. In the 21st century, the rise of anti-secular Sunni-Islamist forces has rendered Turkey’s secular state virtually defunct, and the growth of majoritarian Hindu nationalism has rendered the future of India’s secular state uncertain. The book shows that while the Turkish secular state unravelled over time due to its authoritarian and culturally inauthentic nature, the Indian secular state took a democratic and culturally rooted form. It argues that secularism retains relevance in India and is indispensable to its democracy.
