In this video, Flat 6 Motorsports returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway with our Project 981 Cayman, fresh off the installation of a 3.8L X51 engine. SCCA Track Nights provide an ideal environment to evaluate a major drivetrain change under real-world track conditions while maintaining a controlled and approachable format.
The focus of this outing is initial validation—monitoring temperatures, drivability, power delivery, and overall balance following the engine swap. Track time allows us to assess how the larger displacement X51-equipped engine integrates with the 981 chassis and supporting systems during sustained laps, rather than isolated pulls or short test drives.
We capture on-track footage from the session to give viewers a realistic look at how the car performs as a complete package. Experiences like this directly inform how we approach similar engine conversions, cooling strategies, and supporting modifications for customer cars.
