STORYLINE:
Colombian presidential candidate Iván Cepeda has urged supporters to help him defeat the “far right” at the polls on Sunday and continue the social reforms of President Gustavo Petro’s administration.
Cepeda, the candidate of the ruling coalition, advanced to the June 21 runoff after winning 40.91% of the vote in the first round.
Running against him is Abelardo De la Espriella, who led the field with 43.73% in the first round, according to Colombia’s National Electoral Council.
De la Espriella, who describes himself as an independent candidate, has promised a sharp change in direction if elected.
A political ally and successor figure to Petro, Cepeda has highlighted the administration’s agrarian program, environmental policies, protections for Indigenous and other communities, peace initiatives amid Colombia’s internal armed conflict and other social reforms.
Cepeda, a philosopher, former member of the Communist Youth movement and current member of Congress, distanced himself during the runoff campaign from a citizen-led initiative seeking a constitutional assembly.
The proposal had drawn criticism during the first-round campaign.
Instead, Cepeda’s campaign said it would focus on defeating what it describes as the “far right.”
