Sulphide injury is a common problem in rice cultivation, particularly in paddy fields with poor drainage.
Rice plants are susceptible to sulphide toxicity as they grow in waterlogged conditions that favour the growth of sulphate-reducing bacteria. These bacteria produce hydrogen sulphide gas (H2S), which is toxic to the rice plants.
When rice plants are exposed to H2S, photosynthetic process is inhibited & they may exhibit symptoms such as yellowing and wilting of leaves, stunted growth, and reduced yield.
The symptoms of sulphide injury are similar to those of other stress factors such as nutrient deficiency and disease infection, making it difficult to diagnose.
To prevent sulphide injury in rice, water have to be drained out from the field completely. The field should be left dried till it attains thin hairline cracks and after that irrigation can be done again.
This practice ensures adequate aeration to the soil as it helps in neutralising the toxic effects of H2S by promoting the growth of aerobic bacteria.
Organic matter like compost and manures can also be added as it aids minimizing the toxic effects.
In summary, sulphide injury in rice is a common problem in paddy fields with poor drainage. It can be prevented by improving the drainage of the soil, ensuring adequate aeration, and using organic matter to neutralize the toxic effects of H2S.
