Thriller author J.F.Penn http://www.JFPenn.com interviews award winning and NY Times bestselling thriller author CJ Lyons about her latest books, Edge of Shadows and Hollow Bones. Plus the themes that run through her books, her writing process and how she researches. For Killer Thriller TV http://www.Killer-Thrillers.com
In the video, we discuss:
CJ used to be a pediatric ER doctor before becoming an international best-selling author. The emotion she puts into the books comes from the adrenalin rush of the ER
CJ describes her books as 'Thrillers with heart', because although her books are fast-paced, the heart of her novels is relationships between people. Any book that has a medical scene uses aspects of CJ's actual life as a doctor.
CJ's books have an over-arching theme that heroes are born every day but all her books also include aspects of betrayal and loss, things she has had difficulty dealing with in her own life. A fellow pediatric intern was murdered and the way of dealing with her grief was to write. There's also a gut-wrenching feeling of betrayal in all of us about people we love. Every scene of Blind Faith, the NY Times bestseller, had betrayal from every side.
The settings for CJ's books are usually small, isolated towns where there is no backup, no amazing tools to solve crimes. Where law enforcement officers are under-staffed and over-worked, so people are in more jeopardy. It's a crucible effect where things are happening and there's no easy way out. This comes from CJ's own town where she grew up, so she brings realism to the stories. CJ's charity 'buy a book, make a difference' raises money for scholarships for police officers in under-served communities to get CSI training so they can better deal with crime scenes. In this way, CJ feels she can still help people even though she's not a doctor anymore.
'Edge of Shadows' is out now, the final in the Shadow Ops series. It's Rose and Billy's love story wrapped in a high-octane adventure.
'Hollow Bones' will be out later this year, the latest in the Caitlin Tierney FBI series. Caitlin is out in the jungles of Guatemala to search for a missing girl from a cruise ship and it features a lost ancient Mayan pyramid and medical research around the traffic of human tissue.
CJ talks about her research process, mainly relying on interviews with experts as well as her personal experiences and sensory memories to bring life to the book. She does have a lot of fun researching, including several trips to Quantico and Langley.
CJ talks about her writing life and how she mainly just works on a laptop around her house. She has an exercise desk so she does some work while cycling. She lives on the beach so often walks while thinking of plots. CJ doesn't have a rigid schedule but generally writes every day, dividing her time between new scenes on the page and outlining the next scene, which is about as far as she plans as she is a 'seat of the pant's' writer. Generally, thriller writers are just the nicest people, despite the violence they write!
CJ is a big reader and has so many favorites! She mentions Lisa Gardner and also reads a lot of YA books and non-fiction for research.
