Directed energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process that leverages commercial robotic welding systems to significantly reduce cost and lead time while enabling improved quality.
This demonstration piece, created by EWI with computer-aided manufacturing software and a large-scale NAVUS robotic gantry metal AM system, simulates one of several on a 10-ft. diameter propeller.
Process: Robotic Gas Metal Arc Directed Energy Deposition (DED) Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM)
Equipment: Navus Robotic Gantry Metal Additive Manufacturing System
Material: ER308LSi Wire Feedstock & Alloy 304L Build Platform
Specifications:
• The blade simulates one of several on a 10-ft. diameter propeller. The GMA DED deposition rate was 8.6 lbs./hr.
• Blade design: hollow with a ¾-in. thick wall deposited using 3-adjacent beads per layer.
• Completed blade weighs 270+ pounds and is 42-in. tall.
• Inter-pass temperature was auto-controlled at 350°F maximum, as specified in the draft NAVSEA Technical Publication, using an infrared camera and forced air-cooling system.
• The theoretical build time was 31 hours, but actual build time was much longer to meet maximum inter-pass temperature requirements.
