Russia’s money supply has been rising relentlessly — and that could be creating a serious problem for the Russian economy.

In this video, I take a closer look at Russia’s M2 money supply, why it has expanded so dramatically over the past few years, and how this links to the country’s wartime economy, government spending, bank lending, inflation and high interest rates.

Russia is still dealing with inflation well above the Central Bank’s 4% target, while household inflation expectations remain significantly higher than the official figures. At the same time, interest rates remain extremely restrictive and economic growth is under increasing pressure.

So why does Russia keep adding more money to the economy? What exactly is M2 money supply? And could the combination of rapid money growth, huge state expenditure and weak civilian investment become an increasingly difficult problem for the Kremlin?
