Carol Mull leads this presentation with a focus on two important Washtenaw County locations in the fight for freedom. She will highlight these two stories and their connection to Sharon Mills County Park and Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve, both affiliated with the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission.
In the early 1830s, people escaping slavery found little assistance beyond the slave quarters in the South and scattered African American communities in the north. Some of the early pioneers in Michigan were opposed to slavery and offered shelter and aid to freedom-seekers. Amasa Gillet, founder of Sharon Mills, was an active abolitionist. When Joseph Mallory freed himself, Amasa Gillet offered him sanctuary. A decade later, John Felix White found help fleeing Kentucky through Underground Railroad networks. He reached southeast Michigan and worked on the farm of Royal and Sally Watkins when a posse attempted to abduct him back into slavery.
Carol E. Mull is an author, lecturer and scholar of Underground Railroad history in Michigan, and a founding member and past Chair of the Michigan Freedom Trail Commission. Additional information is available at carolmull.com.
