Poland is moving to tap the EU’s SAFE loan program, which could secure up to €43.7B, and potentially make it one of the scheme’s largest beneficiaries. The long-term, preferential loans are seen as cheaper than market borrowing and a boost for domestic defense production as Brussels pushes to strengthen Europe’s military capacity by 2030.
The Financial Times reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is preparing to announce both presidential elections and a referendum on a peace deal with Russia in the coming days. Zelenskyy has reportedly been pressured by the White House to hold both votes by May 15, or risk losing U.S. security guarantees.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced that despite being invited by the U.S. president himself, Poland will not participate in Donald Trump’s Board of Peace.
