In this fifth episode, we climb to Beeston Castle in Cheshire, one of the most dramatically sited fortresses in England. Built in the 1220s by Ranulf, Earl of Chester, the castle crowns a rocky crag with sweeping views across eight counties. Its commanding position made it both a medieval stronghold and a Civil War fortress, though much of it now stands in ruin. Legends still surround Beeston, from hidden royal treasure to tales of its impenetrable defences.
