Today, we're diving into the fascinating world of Ohio's state amphibian, the Spotted Salamander. These intriguing creatures can be found in low-lying moist woodlands adjacent to swamps, ponds, and creeks, making them a common sight in the Buckeye State.
Now, you might be wondering how a six-inch salamander can pass a fist-sized egg mass. Well, let me explain. When the eggs are laid, they're not that large, but the jelly-like substance that covers them swells when they come in contact with water. This creates a large, chunky egg mass that the salamander can easily pass.
The Spotted Salamander is known for its unique appearance, with two irregular rows of yellow or greenish-yellow spots adorning its back. Occasionally, the spots on the back of its head can even be orange.
