"Steel Guitar Rag": A Classic of Western Swing
"Steel Guitar Rag" is a foundational Western swing instrumental that was pivotal in establishing the steel guitar as a core instrument in Western bands.
Written by Leon McAuliffe, the song was first recorded in 1936 by Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys. While it bears a notable resemblance to "Guitar Rag," a piece recorded by guitarist Sylvester Weaver in 1927, some have noted its stylistic similarities to "On the Beach at Waikiki," a popular Hawaiian song from 1915 that was widely performed on U.S. vaudeville circuits.
This instrumental has been recorded by numerous musicians and bands over the years, including a more recent version by Country Music Hall of Famer, Jimmy Russell.
