The battle took place exactly where the Sempach Chapel and a memorial stone for Arnold von Winkelried stand today.

On July 9, 1386, the forces of the former Swiss Confederation, consisting of 2,000 men, clashed with those of the Duchy of Austria, numbering 4,000 men, in a highly significant conflict during the Sempach War. The Swiss Confederates, comprising the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden, and the city of Lucerne, fought resolutely against Austrian dominance.

Despite being outnumbered by only half of the Austrian troops, they fought fiercely for their freedom and independence. The battlefield is located approximately 4 kilometers outside the town of Sempach, in what is now the canton of Lucerne.

A particularly courageous and remarkable act was performed by Arnold von Winkelried. He sacrificed himself by boldly gathering the Austrian spearmen in the front ranks, thereby providing his comrades the advantage to penetrate enemy lines and achieve victory.

Arnold von Winkelried symbolizes the courage and sacrifice of the Swiss Confederates in the fight for freedom. The clear victory of the Swiss Confederates at the Battle of Sempach strengthened their position against Austria and consolidated their independence. Two hundred brave fighters died on the Swiss side, while 400 men perished on the Austrian side.

The Battle of Sempach in 1386 still stands today as a testament to the unity and resistance of the Swiss against external threats. It is celebrated as a significant event in Swiss history, demonstrating once again that cooperation, determination, and perseverance can lead to success even against formidable enemies.
