I was deep in a project I’d nicknamed Quest — something cinematic and serene, that reminded me of Rivendell — when a new sync opportunity landed in my inbox.
It was for a luxury timepiece brand set in New York. The brief? J Dilla vibes — swingy, soulful, sample-based hip hop. Even though I’d never been fully immersed in his catalogue, his fingerprints are all over the music I love — Bonobo, Amon Tobin, that organic pulse between rhythm and atmosphere.
The catch? No sample loops. No one-shots. Nothing from libraries that could trigger Content ID. Suddenly, what could have been a breezy creative sprint became full-blown sound design mode. I spent hours building drum sounds from scratch, layering kicks and snares, chasing the perfect timbre.
Then came the melody question: how do you make sample-based music without samples? I leaned on some of this vibey chord progression, and a bit of guitar — building something from the ground up that still carried that analog soul.
Within 24 hours, I had “New Chapter” — a simple two-minute beat. Finished just before the deadline. I was proud, exhausted, and honestly spent the next day and a half in bed recovering (my health still demands that).
But finishing it taught me something. The feeling of completing a piece under pressure — with integrity, from scratch — was pure gold. A small win, but one that reminded me why I’m doing this in the first place.
