But Tom sees something different. Tom sees loneliness in the horse's eyes, the same loneliness he feels in his own heart. Instead of rejecting her like everyone else, Tom chooses to believe in her. He begins a patient journey of love and understanding. Every day, he brings her food and sits with her. He plays his old guitar and sings to her. He talks to her about his pain and his loss.
Day by day, the trust between Tom and the horse grows. The horse that everyone called cursed begins to trust the old man who finally chose to see her true nature. Tom names her Sky, because of her beautiful blue eyes and because she seems to hold something of the winter sky inside her.
The Turning Point
During a terrible blizzard on Christmas Eve, Tom becomes lost in the snow while trying to reach Sky. He is dying from the cold, certain that he will freeze to death. But Sky, the horse that was supposed to be dangerous and worthless, finds him in the darkness. She saves his life by pushing him through the blizzard back to the safety of the barn. She keeps him warm through the long, cold night with her own body heat.
The Resolution
When people discover what happened, everything changes. The horse that was going to be killed becomes a hero. But more importantly, Tom's lonely heart is healed. He learns that he is not alone. He learns that connection and love can come from the most unexpected places. Tom's life is transformed. He becomes happier. He becomes part of his community again. He helps other lonely and misunderstood people and animals.
The story shows that Sky also saves Tom's life in a spiritual way. She teaches him that there is still meaning and purpose and love waiting for him, even after loss and heartbreak.
